Coniston Copper

The Coniston Copper project received a £455,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in 2016.

It's been a hugely exciting time for everyone who cares about the scheduled monument. Its incredible history includes the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I.

The project took place between 2016 and 2018. Work focussed on conservation - over 150 items needing repair, stabilisation and reconstruction across ten different structures at the two sites. Without this project this important heritage would be at risk.

Not only did this project give us a unique chance to preserve an exceptional mining heritage, it also provided opportunities for people to find out more and really get involved.

Funders and partners

The Coniston Copper project was funded by a £450,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project was a partnership between Lake District National Park, land owners (Coppermines Cottages and Rydal Estate), Ruskin Museum, YHA Coniston, Grizedale Arts, and Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society.
